The Fifth To Die by J.D. Barker is the second book in the 4MK (Four Monkey Killer) Trilogy. The book picks up months after the first installment. The 4MK case has been taken over by the FBI while Detective Sam Porter and his team have been forbidden from pursuing it any further. However, when it is discovered Porter has been continuing the investigation in secret he is suspended. Meanwhile, girls are again going missing around Chicago and the rest of Porter’s task force is left to deal with the hunt for the “unsub” on their own as the FBI continues the investigation into the 4MK.
I’m going to come right out and say it. I loved this book. I as I read the last 20% or so I realized I was smiling. Usually, I’m pretty sure I have an overall neutral expression on my face but I enjoyed the twists and turns that this book threw at me so much I couldn’t stop smiling even if I had tried. Like the previous book, the characters were likable and relatable. While you were left to figure out some things for yourself (or possibly to be explained in the third and final book), I didn’t feel as though I was left high and dry by any means.
Like the previous book at some point (or maybe at more than one point) I found myself exclaiming “WHAT?!” and making comments to myself while reading parts of this book. When Barker throws a curveball at you he does it well. If you read my review of the first book “The Fourth Monkey” you may remember I had a little bit of an issue with the diary entries. I feel that this book both helped with those issues and vindicated my feelings towards the diary.
If you like crime shows, cop dramas, serial killer series, mysteries, twists and turns, suspense, murder, betrayal, long lost secrets. This is the book for you. I didn’t want to stop reading this book to watch TV or to eat. I just wanted to know what was going to happen on the next page. I very highly recommend this book. I have an ARC to read next but as soon as I can I will be reading the final book in the trilogy and I can’t wait.
